A brief history of our venue

This historic venue features the 1920 Wooten Manor. Originally built as a hunting lodge on 180 acres that surround Buckhorn Lake, Mr. Wooten used the lodge to entertain wealthy businessmen and host extravagant parties. There are rumors that Henry Ford was a frequent guest.

In 1940 the estate was purchased by Dr. Daisy Northcross, the founder of Detroit Mercy Hospital, which was the first African American hospital in Detroit. She used the property to create Medicine Acres as a retreat for Detroiters. The camp included horseback riding, boating, golfing, beachfront cabins, and gourmet dinners hosted in the manor. The Northcross family owned the property until 1995 when most of the property was sold. A large portion of the original land is now part of the Big Valley Nature Preserve.
